Pagan to Christian: the earliest Syriac inscriptions and legal texts

MZAW-Research Seminar for doctoral students and advanced students

by Prof. Dr. John Healey (Manchester)

2. (17-19 Uhr) / 9. (14-17 Uhr) / 23. (14-17 Uhr) Juni 2022

The plan is to study some of the inscriptions of the first three centuries CE in detail in the seminar, pointing out epigraphic and linguistic features, while illustrating the continuities of funerary and legal culture on the basis of recent archaeological discoveries and the small surviving corpus of legal documents. The aim will be to engender discussion and shared insights from different fields of study. Handouts will be sent in advance (with texts in transliteration and with translations for those who do not know the scripts or language).

The number of participants on site is limited to 20, please apply by 2 May 2022 at the latest with an approx. one-page letter of motivation and a short CV (pdf or word) at: c.veit@lrz.uni-muenchen.de
